Eden Exchange recently spoke with Gavin who is a franchisee for Jim’s Antennas on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Gavin looks after multiple areas in the region. He discussed his business and franchising journey and also provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Antennas business.
Thanks for speaking with us Gavin. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with Jim’s Antennas?
I originally come from a trade background which I left to work as a computer programmer. Sitting in an office all day wasn’t for me and I wanted to find a career that would get me outside. I had a great interest in HiFi and Home theatre which led me to the cabling and installation industry. This is where I found Jims to be the leader the field.
What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?
Embrace the group and the system, it has worked for 25 years and it can make you very successful, and work hard!
In your opinion, what makes for a successful Jim’s Antennas franchise owner?
Provide exceptional service to customers. Do this and you will always have referrals and repeat customers
What type of support does Jim’s Antennas once a new franchisee starts?
The main support Jims offers is having someone you can call for answers or advice. This gives the guys confidence to take in new jobs. Remember, you are working for yourself but not by yourself.
What major industry trends should franchise operators and buyers and need to look out for? What’s your take on where the audio visual and home services industry is heading?
Although antennas and cabling will always be needed, guys should keep up to date with the ‘connected’ world. Most things in our homes will need to talk to each other via the internet and we as industry professionals need to know the latest trends.
What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?
Time management, including scheduling is a challenge for new guys as jobs don’t always take as long as you may expect. Also having the right amount of stock on board can be challenging.
A proud achievement for me has been reducing the the amount of work I need to source from the Jim's head office. This occurs as your own work increases and more referral clients start to flow in.
What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?
Solving problems. Personally I have made a niche taking on and fixing things others cant or don’t want to do.
